Now that you know what are the three steps in getting dental braces cheaper, you will be able to go out there right away and save at least a thousand dollars, possibly more on your braces. Most people simply are not aware of these steps so they end up overpaying. So go through the steps of selecting your time frame, selecting your coverage for the braces, and selecting your dentist. You will be able to come out ahead financially, by at least a thousand, and possibly several thousand dollars.

Q.:I need an insurance policy for dentures. I need a plan that does not exclude seniors. I need dental insurance for seniors that will cover my extractions and dentures.

Q.: I have right now a dental plan from my Union. This plan does not cover enough. For example, my wife needs wisdom teeth removed. It has gotten so far as the wisdom tooth coming in and pushing on the roots of the tooth next to it. That then killed the nerve on the other tooth! The dentist we went to asked for $640 upfront for the cost of extractions of wisdom teeth, with the total of $1500.

What supplemental dental plans do you have that would help defray this cost? Also, I need to make sure my four girls are taken care of. It used to be you paid $10-$15 for ANY filling. These days, it goes by categories! You can expect a different price for a filling if just the enamel is affected, a higher price if the second tooth layer is affected, and even higher price if the third layer is affected! We as a family are really having a hard time right now. The Union job I held was going slow and I am not getting back to work until January. Also, I would like to go to a dentist that will set me up with a dental payment plan; all dentists we went to wanted all cash payment upfront and wouldn't set up a payment plan! Fortunately, the wife is not in pain right at this moment. She could however see a dentist any time, really.

A.: Dear T. T., The times have changed, haven't they? Everything seems more expensive than it used to be and more complicated. Cost of filling classified by 3 categories, incredible! And dentists prefer to see cash on hand when they would be happy with just extending a payment plan as little as a year ago. Times have changed. What has not changed much is that there are plans out there, called discount dental plans that can help you lower your cost dramatically. They will save you on any procedure that a dentist or dental specialist such as oral surgeon, is licensed to do. Depending on type of extraction, the wisdom teeth are usually extracted by oral surgeons. As far as a payment plan, you could get one through Care Credit but they will want to see you haveing a good credit rating. Also, as the wisdom teeth can flare up anytime, you want a plan that has no waiting periods. A plan with high annual maximum would suit you as well. Supplemental Dental for a Military Employee Looking to Improve Smile

Q.: I just got a new job here in Georgia with the military. I just want a good smile. I want all my teeth to be in line. I want veneers or lumineers for my teeth. As many as they show in my smile, 20-22, I do not know. My teeth are stained now, and I feel better looking teeth would improve my life.

I will have dental and health insurance through the military that covers to 70% of dental services. However it only starts in 90 days. Even after three months it will not cover veneers at all. You have found for yourself that typical dental insurances do not cover veneers or lumineers. They classify these as cosmetic dental services and exclude them from coverage. As you have experienced, these insurances have waiting periods and you will possibly run into annual limits as well if you use your plan substantially. This story is a sad reminder of how untreated dental problems can cause serious illness.

This sad example is used by citizen groups to put pressure on the governor of Michigan to reinstate Medicaid Dental Coverage for adult Medicaid recipients in Michigan.

The mentally impaired lady in Michigan died during the medical justification process. This process could be avoided if she got dental care through her medicaid on time. Unfortunately she lost the dental part of medicaid coverage July 1st in Michigan.

In California, the dental portion of Medical, known as Denti Cal, went away on July 1st as well.

On to the financing of braces. It seems to me your teeth are not severely out of alignment. Your treatment may not be difficult or as long as the last one. That will save you some money right off the bat.

Second, usually going to a general dentist that is licensed to do braces will cost you quite a bit less than going directly to an orthodontist. Sometimes a general dentist will not be able to fit your braces so you will end up going to an ortho but in your case it is definitely worth a try. Visit a general dentist first.

Need Dentures Relined, No Health Insurance From Work, Lost Denti-Cal

Q: I need affordable dental and medical coverage. I'm currently working part time because no one in the area is looking to hire a storage space manager full time these days. I have no medical or dental benefits from my job. My wife has medicaid or medi-cal but recently lost the dental part that is known as denti-cal. I desperatly need to see a dentist to get my dentures relined. I haven't done that for ten years. The dentist I recently saw suggested to do it annually! Indeed, my upper dentures feel loose and my gums are red and swollen. The relining of dentures would cost $400. I will need a two or three extractions also at the cost of $136-$250 per tooth, depending on whether these are easy or surgical extractions.

I am also looking for additional medical coverage. I do have VA (veteran administration) coverage. However, frankly, I don't like to go there because I'm having difficulty communicating with the staff. I feel their English could be better. And my coverage is not full. I lack hospital coverage. I play sports a lot so hospital coverage is a concern of mine as well. What if I break a leg? A friend of mine recently got into a hospital and his ambulance bill was $1200 and his hospital bill was $40000 for just a few days in the hospital!

A dentist here in Carmel has given me a quote of $6200 for my braces. I don't think driving 40 miles makes any sense for me. What else can I do?

A: Dear C. X., You are making a great point as far as the costs. As much as I know Carmel is a very pretty and expensive coastal city. It makes sense that braces cost more there than elsewhere. Now as far as your question, you'll have to do the consideration on your own. Do you always stay in Carmel? Do you ever drive to a bigger city like San Jose or Monterey? Even with just 25% savings you are looking at well over $1500 in savings. Because of what I said above, the savings will probably be more like $2000! Now consider that you would have to drive back and forth once a month for your braces adjustments. Or consider that maybe you wouldn't have to drive that many times because there are types of braces that require less time to wear for the same effect. So there are several variables. In your situation, I would consider all options before I would discard a $2000 in savings! Yes, Consider the price of gas, but also consider how many times you drive out of town anyways for unrelated reasons. Have fun with your math!

Or they feel like if they are going to just get dentures it makes little sense to commit to a dental plan for a year or longer when all they feel they need is dentures. That may or may not be the case. See, sometimes dentures can be made relatively quickly, and sometimes they take longer to make, especially the ones that are of higher quality. Also, people's mouth changes over time and realignment of dentures, or relining is required. Sometimes as often as once a year! So I do recommend to get a dental plan, even if you have to stay on the plan for the whole year or longer. Get a plan with no waiting periods. I have no insurance at the place where I work currently. I have no medical insurance to be exact. I do have dental insurance. I am paying $8/week or about $35 a month for my dental insurance. I'm okay with the dental insurance because it covers basic services and it paid for my root canal. The root canal would have cost me over a $1000 but I only paid $250 out of pocket. However,

Last year my parents needed me to send them money to pay for their hospital costs, just as an example. I feel now is the time for me to take care of myself for a change. You don't want that. You may even want to think about totally replacing the plan that you have now and is costing you $35/month. That is over $400/year! The downside of plans that have no waiting periods is that you will want to visit a dentist on their private network to receive the maximum benefit. Your dentist might not be on the plan. But then again, what do you like about the dentist that is charging you $3,500 for a couple of crowns?

Be sure to shop around and find a dentist that you really like and feel comfortable with.

I recently canceled Aetna Dental because they would not allow me to have tooth colored fillings. Can you imagine, they only paid for metal fillings! Who in this day and age still wants metal fillings? I have not been to the dentist since I was 9 and my current dentist said I need 15 cavities filled. I was quoted $140-$200 per tooth colored filling by my dentist. Then recently I purchased Delta dental insurance and am still waiting on my package. My dentist said Delta will pay 50% of the cost of fillings. I would also want braces pretty soon. The cost of braces is $4,500 and I am not yet sure that Delta will pay any part of the cost. So I would mainly need a plan that would cover braces. Is there a plan that can help me with my braces?

A: First off, J. X., Congratulations for being able to stay out of the dentist office for 20 years! Quite a feat. I mostly recommend seeing a dentist regularly, but if you are able to maintain your teeth in good shape just with proper nutrition, brushing and flossing, more power to you! Just make sure you stay away from sugary foods!

Regarding braces, I'm quite sure Delta will not help you with the braces, at least not immediately. As far as I know, their individual plans either don't cover braces or they have a 1-2 year waiting period for braces which makes no sense for you. You need a plan that can help you cover your braces sooner.

Regarding your 15 fillings, you need to look in your documentation for Delta Dental. Their plans have low annual maximums. Typically, the annual maximum would be $1,000 - $1,500 per year at most. So you could have at most 5-6 fillings done. And remember, you need 15.Also, look into the documentation to see if there are waiting periods.

You need a plan that has high annual maximum, or, better, no annual maximum. There are a few out there. I would suggest to go with one of the discount dental plans to either supplement or completely replace Delta. Dental discount plans differ from Delta or Aetna in that they have no waiting periods, no limits on services and, most importantly, they do not dictate you what services you can or can not have done. This decision is left to your dentist and yourself.

So you decide what kind of fillings you want, and how much dental work do you want done at any given time. You will find several companies like Ameriplan, GE Wellness, etc that have large networks of providers. In choosing a discount plan, make sure you have a participating provider close to you. Also make sure they go by the published discount fee schedules.

A: Dear P. F., I can understand your frustration. Just when you retire, and when your dental needs may become the greatest, you run out of company-sponsored coverage. I've seen that happen over and over again.

Medicare for the most part does not touch dental and so you are left out there on your own. Another shock for sure is that you've been accustomed to coverage, and you hardly even seen any expense related to that as it was taken out of your paycheck before you even saw the money. Now, the dental expense will be out of your own pocket.

I would ask your dentist what dental plans his/her office accepts first. Dental offices, however are notorious for recommending names that make for great group plans such as the one you had before retirement. However, when it comes to individual plans, the same insurance company that offers a great group plan could offer a lousy individual plan. Beware.

Look for the small print when purchasing individual insurance. Look for waiting periods. You sound like you are not comfortable waiting and paying premiums for a year or two before the coverage even kicks in! Look for annual maximums. When the amount of services is exhausted for the year, you will start paying 100% out of pocket even though you are paying for insurance. Also, compare the deductibles - you can count them simply as an addition to the annual cost of the plan.

If the restrictions of conventional individual insurances are overly restrictive, you may consider simply not paying insurance and creating a dental savings account, and self insure your costs, or get a discount dental plan that will have no waiting periods, no limits on services, and no deductibles. It just all depends on how do you want to manage your finances.
